In todays hyper competitive world of ecommerce there are still 5 convincing arguments why SEO is essential for your web business;

One of the many advantages of trading on the internet is that your business is not restricted by time, location and type of buyer. Your buyers are also able to access your site on a variety of mobile devices allowing them to make purchases almost anywhere. However to reap the benefits of virtually trading on a 24 hour basis to anyone with internet access requires effective and efficient marketing.

1. World wide market place

In order to reach your potential market your website needs to be able to be found and found by customers who are looking for your products. If your website is properly optimized so search engines rank your site highly and above your competition. Search Engines do not actually rank websites; they rank individual pages of a website. Therefore, every page of your website must be optimized for Search Engine optimization.

2. Targeted Traffic

An increase in website traffic may lead to increased online and offline sales. However it is not just all about increasing visitors to your website, the visitors need to be directed to your site when they are interested in your product. SEO is about ensuring that your website pages rank higher for keywords and phrases relating to your products. SEO will also assist you in learning how to transform your visitors into buyers by utilizing the content of your in the most effective manner possible.

3. Build Brand Awareness

When customers are searching for your product using a search engine, they often conduct the same search using a number of different keywords and phrases relating to your product category. If your website consistently appears within the top 6 results for these keywords they will associate your company as one of the market leaders in the category, thus providing your brand identity with an elevated status above your competitors and familiarity.

4. Capture long term leads

SEO provides you with an ability to generate “zero cost” web leads over the long term when compared with other web marketing campaigns i.e PPC, Banner Advertising, email marketing etc. Although there is a certain amount maintenance associated with SEO as keywords change, consumer behavioural changes and competitor activity SEO still provides the highest marketing return on investment.

5. Your competitors are doing it!

Every day many more businesses are realising the importance of SEO and are actively taking steps to improve their marketing campaigns and Search Engine Optimisations. This leads to increased and aggressive competition for search engine rankings. You cannot afford to sit on your laurels and let your website fall below the top 6 results of search engine result page (SERP) as this will reduce your visibility is drops to almost zero.

Although the hype of euphoria regarding Search Engine Optimisation has died down, SEO is still vitally important for your website, and even though you feel that your website is sufficiently optimised, there is still room for improvement.

The modern business environment is constantly evolving. Many organizations now take the view that in order to not only survive but also an attempt to out maneuver the effects of competitive forces it is essential to be early adopters of new technology.

Everyday the number of tools with which employees and customers communicate is growing, as are the number of places in which corporate content can be stored. In a typical organization of information workers there are a plethora of tools in use;

Traditional computing platforms like desktop computers, laptops and netbooks.

Corporate emails systems using local clients, such as Outlook; corporate email systems using web-based access, such as Outlook Web Access; and personal Webmail systems.

Unified communications systems

Corporate instant messaging and Web conferencing systems, such as Microsoft Office Communicator; and instant messaging systems, such as MSN Messenger.

Dedicated social media tools, such as IBM Connections and Jive; and “public” systems, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

File transfer systems in the cloud, such as Box.net and YouSendIt.

Removable content storage and transfer devices like USB Keys, CDs/DVDs and external hard drives.

Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

Content synchronization services, such as Dropbox.

Content backup services like Backblaze and Mozy.

Content archiving services.

Voice-over-IP services, such as Skype.

One of the side effects of the constant rate of change and level of integration required is that all too often the securitization of IT systems is most often overlooked or only given secondary concern. In cases where security has been considered it has proven to be woefully inadequate.

In many cases especially where cloud services are concerned it is often assumed that the service vendors security will provide adequate protection. However, like everything else in business this tends to follow the Pareto’s principle, in that in 80% of cases this may prove to be adequate BUT, there is a 20% chance of a vulnerability being exposed and in today’s day and age these stakes are still way too high.

Consider these examples;

On June 19, 2011, Dropbox updated its code and inadvertently allowed access to every Dropbox account for about four hours before resolving the problem. During that time, a hacker was able to download Dropbox customer data from a number of accounts.

In late 2010, a configuration error allowed Microsoft BPOS customers to download address
book information for other BPOS customers for about two hours

If these factors were not enough to worry about, there are also the user based errors that prove to be ever more on the increase;

The Social Security numbers for 20,000 employees of Swedish Medical Center in Washington State were made accessible on the Internet for nine weeks during April 2011.

It was revealed in May 2011 that an employee of San Juan Unified School District in central California stored confidential employee information on a flash drive. When the employee used that drive for volunteer work at her church, the confidential information was uploaded to a Web site where it was freely available for about six month.

In 2009, an employee of Rocky Mountain Bank mistakenly sent sensitive information to the wrong Gmail address and included a confidential attachment that never should have been sent. Because the unintended recipient never responded to the sender, the bank sued Google to determine the identity of the recipient.

Hundreds of thousands of devices – including smartphones, tablet computers, laptops and usb keys – are left behind at airports, in taxi’s, in restaurants, and in other locations each year.

Most corporate data is not encrypted

The commonality in all these cases is that the corporate data involved in these incidents was never stored in an encrypted state.

the majority of emails, files and other corporate content are not sent or stored with any sort of encryption, they can be easily intercepted and accessed by unauthorized parties, or they can be accidentally leaked in any number of ways. It is this oversight that enables the high occurrence of security breaches.

Many of the information systems developed internally and externally for enterprises throughout the world are developed without any form of encryption at the data storage level, and much of the security is dependent on application access roles and privileges. The result is that almost 80% of corporate data worldwide is comprisable!

If you would like further information on how to ensure your corporate data is among the 20% of secure organizations, contact Three Nine. You’ll be able to sleep easier at night safe in knowledge that we are working hard to ensure that your data stays firmly in your hands!

With 2011 being probably one of the worst years for security incidents with companies like SONY, RSA, Lockheed Martin, Epsilon, FOX, NASA, ESA and more reporting significant breaches. The financial cost of all these breaches totalled together amounts to a bail out package for a small country in eastern Europe. This is money no organisation can afford to lose especially small and medium sized businesses

With the financial turmoil set to continue for most of the foreseeable future, it is a sure fire bet that criminal activity is set to increase. It is therefore essential that companies really take this threat seriously.

Sadly IT security - like life insurance and house insurance - is often seen as an unnecessary expense and it’s true value is only realised after a catastrophic event when it’s too late. Not taking action on enhancing your businesses security measures plays right into the hands of the attackers.

The easiest way for an external threat to get to your private data is through your network. The obvious solution to that problem is to get the data out of your network. Of course, we know you wouldn’t want to do that. We also know that while you may want to sniff every packet for anything suspicious, you wouldn’t want your network to crawl either.

So what can you do to enhance your networks security without placing a burden on your organisations productivity?

Review of your policies and processes for weaknesses

This is the less glamorous side of IT security and often perceived to be the less effective straategy. It is therefore the area that is most often overlooked. The truth is that this is an area that shoud never be overlooked. Ensuring that an organisation has clear policies, processes and procedures keeps them of trouble.

Policies are high level and should clearly layout in a short and concise format what is expected of staff when it comes to IT usage and security. There should never be any grey areas and staff should be able to refer a policy document to obtain guidelines easily.

Processes lay out the flow of information used enforce the policy. These should also be clear and concise. The process lays out the different areas, people involved and the flows of information that have to be considered in order to have a good structure to support an incident handling team.

Procedures define specific areas of the process detailing exactly “how” it will be implementd.

Employee education is paramount. Most employees want to do the right thing; they just need to be told how. Clear written policies and procedures set expectations, and establish a culture of high standards. It takes more than technology. Organizations need employees monitoring each other. Well thought-out policies ensure staff members feel comfortable blowing the whistle when they see another employee bucking the rules.

With a little forward thinking, most of the internal breaches from which businesses suffer today could be thwarted, or at least severely diverted before massive financial and reputational casualties result.

Identify business and mission critical applications

Mission-critical applications are the essential programs on which your organization depends to get work done. These applications directly affect the company’s ability to generate revenue, maintain high customer satisfaction, keep employees productive, and sometimes prevent disasters.your organization must carefully decide which platform to use for running these vital applications. As IT organizations evaluate these alternatives, they often make a decision by weighing each platform against a common set of requirements: Will it be reliably available in demanding scenarios and scale as usage grows? Will it be secure? How difficult is it to manage and service? What applications and partners are available to assist with planning and implementation?

Mission critical applications are often designed for fault tolerance, and their development and maintenance typically follow a rigorous methodology. Their design may incorporate regulatory requirements such as security and auditing. Your IT platform needs to support all of this, as well as the ability to handle changes as your organization grows and your requirements shift.

Regular network audits and vulnerability management

Conducting regular network audits is essential an essential security process. It provides IT administrators with a two-pronged approach to network security in that it firstly, it enables IT Administrators to carry out vulnerability assessments and provide an accurate view of the entire network and subnets, making it easier to spot any open ports, unaccounted for components or other discrepancies. Secondly, it allows prompt action to protect against any open vulnerability.

Network security is not just about protecting an individual computer; it is also about identifying and correcting vulnerability found in the entire network. Network auditing is fast becoming an indispensable tool in the maintenance of a healthy network.

One of the most worrying common traits of software development is that security is left out because of cost! This results in much of the software we use today will have vulnerabilities, in fact dare we say that all software we use will have vulnerabilities.

To take this even further we need to be concerned with system security, which comes hand in hand with the specifics of issues with an item of software being secure.

In this post we will try to provide an answer which comes from a different angle rather than focus on the difficulties of software development and the technical challenges, differing operating systems and compilation conundrums which are of the utmost importance, but rather on the lateral causes.

Humans makes mistakes

Well there is probably no surprise there? And obviously a software developer is bound to make some errors when writing many lines of code. This is true, but how many mistakes are more importantly made in the conceptual phase. On the project drawing board, or in the perception of risk vs. reward as a solution is under preparation.

It is the general project mentality that is the focus of this post. We won’t concern ourselves with security products, Microsoft hotfixes or the availability of zero day exploits. Whilst these are important, we believe the normal day-to-day software, which is not deemed as a security release, is more worthy of focus because this is what builds up the portfolio of applications that form the COE (Common Operating Environment) or corporate build.

Often the need to get things out of the door from a project perspective is greater than the immensity of the technical task.

In order to ensure deadlines and milestones are achieved corners will be cut and often the results are a trade off. We reduce testing, lose a version, de-scope certain elements. It is this process that leads to problems that are found later as releases contain flaws or elements combine to cause a set of events, which expose a weakness.

It is instinct that drives the human mind to look for the best possible outcome. Any constraint will lead to a reduction in quality elsewhere. We accept this in order to get the job done.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few

In an ideal world a new system would have prototypes, many rounds of testing, back to the drawing board and more prototypes and testing. In the reality of the world of fast paced software development these often get paid little more than lip service., with the expectation that the product will be fit for purpose with a minimal understanding of the risks at stake.

A solution design may be technically perfect but when we visit the cost centre and strategic vision centre we often tend to dilute the solution to make it fit within these. This is often due to the fact that we don’t want to rock boat with either the client or the senior management teams involved.

You get what you pay for

We all want a service as fast as possible and as cheap as possible, and often there will be hell to pay for if an error occurs. The human mind does not comprehend the fact that if you continuously try to reduce cost of something quality will suffer. The current economic crisis is testament to this fact, that in an attempt to increase the yield from investments the quality of the investments became fatally flawed. We are all now running round like headless chickens looking for solutions to solve a crisis that should never have been allowed to happen. With the right Risk Mitigation strategies and due diligence weaknesses in the investments should have been uncovered, but unfortunately greed got in the way and corners where cut, and the results speak for themselves.

The idealistic perfect software does exist but it is not in the project budget in most cases. The first thing to go when cutting costs is security. Unfortunately it’s one of the areas that costs a lot, but offers no direct reward or gain perceived by the business.

The modern business environment presents many new challenges especially when picking the right technology choice . Sorting through the smart phones, PDAs, tablets and rugged computers available for business use is no easy task. With a plethora of devices offered by hundreds of suppliers in a thousand configurations, finding the device best suited for your particular environment and workforce, this task becomes ever more daunting.

Rather than trying to stay on top of all the products that are being introduced and discontinued, the technologies and features being added, plus available peripherals and software, enterprises can quickly cut down to a few viable options by following five basic tips:

Consider the environment and the user

Stick to industry standards & certifications

Simplify support

Require flexibility

Pay attention to power

Consider the Environment and the Use

The most important factor to find the right fit for an enterprise mobile computer is the environment in which it will be used. Failure rates for hand held devices vary widely, from 11 percent to 38 percent annually, which is a reflection of how rugged the mobile computer is and how well it is suited for the specific usage environment. For example, a hand held that will land on a carpeted floor when it is dropped doesn’t need to be as rugged as one that will land on concrete. Drops are the leading cause of damage to mobile computers and are the leading cause of resulting damage and downtime. To be considered rugged — and therefore reliable — mobile computers must be rated to repeatedly withstand at least five-foot drops to a non-yielding surface. Understanding how the computer will be used is also very important. Not all work is performed the same, so observing how different workers go about their daily activities is worth the investment in time. These observations provide insight on how processes can be improved and which mobile computer features are desirable. For example, even a small, lightweight computer with keys can be awkward to use during processes that constantly require workers to lift or pull items, so voice/speech input would be valuable because it provides hands-free data entry so workers can keep their eyes and hands on the task. For operations where workers would benefit from being able to speak with supervisors or colleagues to quickly resolve issues, using a wireless voice-over-IP (VoIP) or push-to-talk (PTT) connection can be a great productivity aid. For frequent voice and speech use, it is important that mobile computers can support the necessary software and wired and wireless Bluetooth® headsets. Support for voice/speech, bar code and RFID reading, picture taking and other image capture, wireless printing and other tasks can all be built into mobile computers. By gaining insight into the actual work process, organizations can specify features to improve it.

Gartner Inc. highlighted the advantage of using Microsoft operating systems in its “MarketScope for the ‘Ruggedized’ Handheld-Computer Market” report that was issued in December, 2008, which reads in part: “Gartner recommends that clients deploying applications on a ruggedized device primarily consider only Windows platforms to reduce project risk…. Other OS options represent a high degree of risk for buyers because of the small number of vendors producing those products. Gartner sees Research In Motion’s BlackBerry OS in limited deployment using standard smartphone hardware in field service, CRM and hospitality for non ruggedized devices.”It’s important to choose devices that are convenient for workers to carry and use throughout the full shift. Reducing operator fatigue should improve productivity and device reliability. Overall size and weight are important, but choosing the best device isn’t as simple as selecting the smallest and lightest. The shape of the computer, how its weight is distributed, and how easily workers with different sized hands can carry the device and access the keypad are important considerations that shouldn’t be overlooked. Mobile computers with integrated bar code and RFID readers, radios and other peripherals may weigh more than those without, but they provide an ergonomic advantage because the worker doesn’t have to carry and manage multiple devices.

Stick to Industry Standards & Certifications

Rugged mobile computers are specialized devices designed for collecting data and providing real-time information in non-office environments, but they should still adhere to enterprise standards for connectivity, security and development whenever possible. Specifying devices that meet these criteria will help keep down development, integration and support expenses, which can vary greatly and are a significant source of TCO. Specifying devices with a Microsoft mobile operating system, particularly Windows Mobile®, is the best step organizations can take to keep development, implementation and support costs in check. Standardizing on the Microsoft environment gives organizations the widest choice of packaged software applications, ISVs, systems integrators, development tools and device management systems, plus provides a clear migration path for future upgrades and expansion. Devices with less-supported or proprietary operating systems and development environments are costlier to integrate and support and often require contracting specialized outside software development, which limits flexibility and can be expensive

Mobile computers should communicate with enterprise systems using standard connectivity and security. Security policies should not be adjusted or weakened to accommodate wireless mobile devices. Mobile computers are available that support a variety of standard wireless security protocols (including 802.11x, WPA2, FIPS, et al) and virtual private networks (VPNs) so security can be applied and managed consistently with that used for laptop and desktop computers. Organizations with wireless LAN backbones from Cisco Systems should specify CCX certification for their mobile devices to simplify integration and management and to benefit from the advanced features available in a Cisco environment. If wide-area wireless connectivity will be used, the mobile device maker should have partnerships with cellular carriers and offer devices certified for data and voice on the preferred network.

To further reduce development, integration and support costs, look for mobile device manufacturers that have partnerships or certified interfaces with your enterprise software provider. Mobile computers are available with built-in connectivity to SAP, Oracle, IBM and Microsoft back-end systems, plus many major warehouse management systems, field service solutions and other application software.

Simplify Support

It is important not only to consider the workers who will use mobile computers, but those who will support them. Support-friendly features and compatibility with IT asset management and mobile device management systems help increase uptime and productivity while reducing support costs. Management features can be a major differentiator between consumer-oriented and enterprise-grade mobile devices. Because they are designed for large deployments (rather than for sale to individual consumers) enterprise mobile computers often have built-in features that streamline provisioning and deployment, enable remote, no-touch troubleshooting and configuration changes, and otherwise allow proactive management. Enterprise mobile computer suppliers also offer a range of deployment, support and maintenance services, and can be compared on their service response times, ability to support rollout schedules and other criteria. Choosing devices with a stable operating system and integrated support capability also provides flexibility for large roll outs, where it is common for some users to receive their mobile computers a year or even longer after the first group deployed. Changes to applications and device configurations are inevitable, so standardized systems and remote management capability are key to keeping mobile device populations consistent and optimized. Remote management is especially important for mobile devices deployed for field based and other off-premise operations because workers do not have ready access to spare equipment. Productivity losses can be very high if devices or applications lock up or fail to work in those environments. Therefore, there is strong value in the ability of IT support staff to remotely troubleshoot devices, so they can be returned to service without having to be returned to a central service location. Some mobile management systems even predict when batteries will fail, so replacements can be installed proactively. Mobile management systems can also lock down devices to prevent unauthorized data transfer and prevent non-business Web browsing, phone calls and e-mailing.

Require Flexibility

Rugged mobile computers can withstand drops, shocks, humidity, heat, cold, rain, snow and even occasional vandalism, but often they can’t survive a change of mind or business requirements. The leading reason mobile computers used in industrial, retail, distribution and service environments are replaced is not damage or device failure. Instead, most mobile computers are replaced because they are considered technologically obsolete and can’t support desired information systems, software applications or business processes. To avoid this unnecessary expense, it is important to select mobile computers that can change with the organization and provide a platform for future enhancements. Some of the reasons devices are replaced prematurely are that work processes change, additional communication is desired (e.g. wireless LAN, WWAN or Bluetooth®) but there is no integrated radio or available expansion capability, or because application changes or security updates can’t efficiently be distributed to devices. Many of these problems can be avoided by following the previous tips about operating systems, standards and support, but peripheral issues require more consideration. Bluetooth connectivity in the mobile computer provides powerful protection against obsolescence when peripheral needs change. Enterprises don’t always know the types of peripherals their future operations will require, so it is hard to plan device requirements around them. Bluetooth makes it easy by providing a flexible, standard interface for integrating thousands of different peripheral devices. For example, one of the most common changes to operations is to implement mobile printing after mobile computers have been rolled out. Mobile printers for warehouse, field service and other enterprise operations have Bluetooth interfaces, so they can be easily integrated at any time. Besides mobile printers, Bluetooth connectivity is built into bar code readers, headsets for both VoIP telephony and voice/speech-directed systems, scales, sensors, GPS receivers, computer docking stations and many other peripherals that serve enterprise needs. Many organizations transition from traditional bar code reading to more sophisticated and varied means of image capture. These include reading 2D bar codes on parts and shipping labels and replacing bar code-only readers with devices that can capture customer signatures for proof of delivery, take digital images to document delivery, pickup or maintenance conditions, and even to perform document imaging for electronic document processing. Mobile imagers integrated into mobile computers can perform all these functions, plus read 1D and 2D bar codes. Integrated imaging provides flexibility to meet a variety of data and image capture needs without requiring separate peripheral devices. Many business that use RFID began with a limited deployment (such as for tracking a specific type of asset or shipment) then expand RFID use to more of their operations. In these situations, handheld computers that are field-upgradeable to read and write RFID tags and labels are highly advantageous because they can leverage prior investments without requiring all new equipment. Changes to software applications or preferred business processes can also create new requirements for mobile computers. For example, in an effort to improve productivity an operation may want to move to voice-directed processes for their picking operations. If so, the mobile computer needs to support a headset (either via Bluetooth or an available interface port) and may need software extensions to enable audio and speech features. Using wireless LANs to give workers push-to-talk and VoIP functionality creates similar requirements. Adoption of these and other technologies and processes is growing, so the need for flexible mobile computer platforms is growing accordingly.

Pay Attention to Power

Scanning and imaging, data collection and processing, wireless communication and other enterprise mobile computing activities all draw power from the device battery. Power management is a very important (and often overlooked) feature of mobile computers because it directly impacts uptime and user productivity and acceptance. Power management should be evaluated beyond what’s on the spec sheet. Organizations should develop usage models that outline how much the mobile computers will be used and which capabilities (e.g. bar code reading, wireless communication) will be used so power requirements and performance results from pilots or other testing can be factored into the mobile device selection. Expected battery life is only a starting point for comparing mobile computers. Differentiating factors include whether data is lost if the device loses power, how quickly batteries are recharged, whether the charging dock prevents overcharging (overcharging causes batteries to lose capacity more quickly), the maximum number of times batteries can be recharged, whether the mobile computer provides intelligent power management to limit its battery consumption, and if extended-life batteries are available.

Conclusion

Many mobile computers can quickly be ruled out from consideration because they lack the battery power to last the length of a shift, or lack the staying power to remain reliable throughout a three-to-five year life cycle. Features like rugged construction, well supported operating systems, standard interfaces, remote management support and flexible peripherals provide value by protecting organizations from having to replace their mobile computers prematurely. By understanding how these features differentiate devices, and by carefully considering the environment in which mobile computers will be used, organizations will be able to determine which specific models will provide the most value. Three Nine offers a complete range of mobile computers to meet enterprise needs. We have developed strategic partnerships with industry leaders and provide expert consultancy services in order to help enterprises ascertain which devices and software would best suit their operating environments.

We are proud to announce that our new ecommerce website is officially open for business. We have many more features and benefits to implement within the website but in keeping with our Lean and Agile principles we have decided to launch with a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), in order to assess how our current service offering compared to customer expectation.

We have some very lofty expectation of how we will exceed our customer expectations and we couldn’t wait to be put to the test! Over the coming weeks and months we will be implementing a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and a payment gateway with SagePay.

We take security, governance and compliance very seriously here at ThreeNine, in fact its within the top three of our Nine values we use to guide our company (more about these later) , and it is because of this we have opted to undergo the highest level of scrutiny within the market place. This is all done to not only ensure that our customers can be assured that they are dealing with a company of complete integrity, but more importantly to assure ourselves that we hit a benchmark of what is required in the market place, with the aim of raising this benchmark further as time goes by.

We encourage all our customers to browse this first iteration of our site and pass on any comments however damning they may be, we look forward to turning any negative critique into a positive experience.

We are also offering any customers that actually do make a purchase over these inaugural months a life time of exclusive offers and complimentary products. We aim to repay your faith and commitment to us with a life time of gratitude!

We look forward to making your acquaintance over the next few years and hope our relationships will become stronger and mutually beneficial!
